How making small changes are improving my eating behaviors.

Capital Recreation is in business to make recreation accessible to all. I am not here to tell you the what, the who, and the when. I am here to support and encourage your positive behaviors. I am a Certified Recreational Therapist (CTRS) breaking down barriers to leisure and recreation participation. This blog is here as a tool to spread my personal thoughts and ideas. But most of all, to create community!

“Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” ~Michael Pollan

I want to start this post with the paraphrase; you are what you eat, so don’t be fast or cheap. There is a tremendous amount of research pointing in the direction that we and our cells quite literally change and alter with the types of food we ingest on a daily basis. I am not here to tell you the what, or how of eating. Though I do think most of us over here understand the basic importance of eating well. Example; if an apple and apple pie were placed in front of you and asked, which one is best for you, which one would you choose? … I know my answer would be the apple (I am not saying, not to eat apple pie. There is a time and place for most everything.) Then why do so many of us (myself included), make the choice of ‘apple pie’ or the quick fix to satiate our hunger cravings. Don’t worry! I find myself falling in this trap too (which is why I am writing this). You should know you are not alone.

Many evenings after getting from work I ask, ‘what’s for dinner?’ Since I do most of the cooking I usually then go to the kitchen and pull together food that my spouse and I will enjoy. Then, there are other days which I am calling the local pizza place to order out. To be honest, most of the time I get this guilty feeling when ordering out … because I know I have a pantry, fridge and freezer stocked with wholesome foods. Why couldn’t I muster the courage or time to pull myself together… even to make a quick salad, soup, or stew? Most times, the hard truth is, I was lazy and didn’t properly plan or prepare. So how do we get to ensuring that I eat better?

Here are 3 simple concrete steps which have been helping me over the last 6 weeks. I know they could help you too.

  1. Buy what you need, not what you want. Have an idea of the meals and snacks you plan to have over the coming week or two when grocery shopping.
  2. Set time aside, preferably right after you get your groceries and produce to prep, wash, chop, and store. I put on a podcast or some music and it usually takes me about an hour to get everything done.
  3. Each evening or morning take 5 – 15 minutes to prepare your foods for that day or the next.

Good Luck!!
