Happy February and happy Heart Health month. During this month I am highlighting heart healthy activities from the lenses of a Recreational Therapist. Getting the privilege to workout with someone like a friend, family member, or colleague is wonderful way to spend part of my day. It boosts my mood when sometimes I’m not feeling my greatest to do something positive, like moving my body or getting outdoors. However, when I do workout, whether it is alone or with someone else I always feel better afterwards. Aside from feeling great after exercise, I find that it translates into the things I do right after completion of the exercise or recreation. Personally, when I workout with other people or friends, I find the post-exercise high to be greatly increased. I find that my productivity levels increase, and I feel like I can tackle anything that comes my way. If you are feeling unmotivated, you don’t need to go far. It starts with picking up the phone, sending a text message, or reaching out to someone with whom you feel comfortable sharing what you are up to and what you want to do. If possible, meet up with them. Even if it means that you are slowing down. Doing the exercise with someone else, enjoying your time with them, and meeting your activity goal with fill you with accomplishment, satisfaction, and the desire and willingness to return a second, third, or fourth time. Then, eventually making it a habit. With positive habits, with positive lifestyles choices, we feel better and our quality of living increases. Which is ultimately what we are aiming for. With it being heart health month, it is a great time to resume, start, or restart doing things that make us feel good. Take a moment right now, and do something that bring you joy, happiness, and self-love.
