In the beginning of 2022, I wrote down a few words, phrases, and themes I wanted to live by and embody. These words or phrases weren’t anything big, extravagant, or beyond my imagination. They were words and phrases I knew I was going to meet every day and say, yes, I can! One of the many phrases used in ‘22 was, control the controllable and let all else slide. My primary theme of the year was community, and word was love.
Since this was a major success for me over the last year, I’m back at it and doing it again for 2023. I’m going to continue working on controlling the controllables, community, and love. For me, controlling the controllables and letting all else slide is exactly that. If it includes me or I’m directly involved with the outcome of the process, I am going to ensure that I dot all my eyes and cross all my tees. If the task is outside my control, or I’m unable to change the result of the process, I let it go. I’m not saying to turn a blind eye to people or things in imminent danger. On the contrary, go help! Should the work that I do have a direct impact on the outcome, come hell or high water, I will ensure all tools are deployed and used to ensure the best possible result.
Community. Community and bringing people together to participate in moving the needle in the correct direction has been a calling of mine for a long time. Bringing people together fills my cup with tremendous gratitude and humble satisfaction. Even more, bringing unique individuals together to participate in movement and recreation tops my chart, and overflows to all other areas of my life. Moreso, and maybe a little “selfish” on my part, I get to listen and learn from everyone around me. 2022 was good for me in this respect. When I can use my two ears to listen more, and my words to elevate, unite, and bring people together is when I know I am doing the right thing.
Love. Love for me is all about love. Love for me is all about being fair, equitable, kind, compassionate, and above all making the person I’m interacting with feel welcome! To be a reductionist, love is about removing the horse blinders. It’s about removing any barriers or notions that I might have been holding onto, and truly loving.
So, what am I adding or doing differently for 2023? In 2023 many of my goals remain the same, with an emphasis on being fully present and going one level deeper. With that being said, I’m adding in fun for 2023. Fun is often looked as elementary or childish. I’ve heard people say, you can’t be having too much fun, or you’ll never get anything done. I’m here to say that isn’t the case. At a young age we explore and have experiences which are positive, negative, or neutral. With these lived experiences and feelings, we create notions for or against. Which is why you probably don’t like taking the trash cans to the curb! It was never an enjoyable task for me growing up, and over the years I’ve created distain toward it. On the other hand, if you created unique and pleasurable experiences in your youth, you’re probably seeking out those very same things as an adult. If you enjoyed playing ball, going boating, or enjoyed hiking, you probably still enjoy those activities. So, let’s have more fun in 2023!
