It’s that time of year when the calendar naturally goes from December to January. For some of us, it’s time to restart, refocus, and set plans for the coming year into action. It’s a great time to double down and refocus our energy. However, I do not place all my stock in setting astronomical goals or “resolutions” as my end-all-be-all. I try to have great specificity and focus on immediate short-term goals.
Trying to set resolutions and non-concrete goals will only send you down the road to disappointment. When we focus on the immediate task in front of you, you will have greater focus. With greater focus you will want to get started and get yourself on the highway to success. Additionally, short-term focused goals will provide you with targets. Having targets to shoot and aim at, will give you motivation to step up day after day with the correct focus and intensity. And we all know what happens when we show up regularly.
Now that we are showing up regularly, we’ll meet our short-term specific goals. When we start to taste success we build confidence, we feel confident, and feel proud of putting in the work. Further, when we feel confident, we will continue showing up. When you show up, you will do the work, reach, and surpass your goals. Bottom line, set goals that you can put between your teeth and bite down!
In closing, I challenge you to challenge yourself to set weekly tangible goals for the upcoming month. Allow these targets to line up with your broader goals for whatever you are aiming to complete and achieve. For example, if you have a goal to move for 30 minutes daily, set up short-term goals that will enable you to be successful.
If you, a friend, or friend of friend are looking for guidance, assistance, and support, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. Using evidence-based practices, we can meet and pass our goals.
