Just start!

Less overthinking and more doing to get the ball rolling

Opinion

Capital Recreation is in business to make recreation accessible to all. I am not here to tell you the what, the who, and the when. I am here to support and encourage your positive behaviors. I am a Certified Recreational Therapist (CTRS) breaking down barriers to leisure and recreation participation. This blog is here as a tool to spread my personal thoughts and ideas. But most of all, to create community!

Quite often when I’m in conversation with others I get asked about or tend to talk much about healthy living, eating habits, and running. I love talking on these topics and can do so for a very long time. I have my opinions and also love the science and data to back me up (or is it the other way around?). Talking of data and science one thing is for sure … we as humans tend to overthink and walk ourselves into not doing anything at all. I have seen this time and time again in my many experiences across all populations and ability levels. We tend to overcommit (because we love saying yes) and under deliver (thus leaving one with a sense of misfortune, resentment, or sadness).

The next time you plan to make a commitment to yourself or others, I want you to ask yourself, what is one thing I can do today to make sure I am on track to meet my long-term goal? If I can’t take this one step today, what will I do to ensure I get it done tomorrow? What am I doing for me to help me succeed? For if not me then who? If not now, then when?

I have faith in you and know that you can take the next step in becoming the best version of yourself. Will you be the one who has visual reminders about hydration? Lay out your exercise cloths for first thing in the morning, or at your ideal time?

It is time we all stop overthinking. It is time to make things SIMPLE and easy. We do not need extra complexity in our day to figure trivial things out like the hobbies and routines we’re already doing.

I challenge you to ONE task a day through the end of the month just for YOU. When completed with the task, tell a friend, neighbor, or family member, and tell them how you feel. Next, keep each other accountable, and most of all — have a good time.

Finally, I always love hearing from you and your personal journey. Share your moments of growth and success on social media using the hashtag #shlomotrained

Until next time – peace, and virtual fist bump going your way!
