Getting started on your road to success

Capital Recreation is in business to make recreation accessible to all. I am not here to tell you the what, the who, and the when. I am here to support and encourage your positive behaviors. I am a Certified Recreational Therapist (CTRS) breaking down barriers to leisure and recreation participation. This blog is here as a tool to spread my personal thoughts and ideas. But most of all, to create community!
In last week’s posting I wrote about new beginnings, breaking down the calendar year, and setting your sights on shorter term goals for long-term success. You can check out that posting, by clicking over here. This week I want to write about turning your key and getting started. We all know that person who said they would do such and such, be the ‘yes’ person, but never gets anything done.
Ready, set, let’s go!
First things first, we need to know where you are today and what you want to do or achieve before tomorrow. Make the goal small and meaningful to you. This does not need to be something extravagant or big. On the contrary, set your goal for the next 24 hours and then cut it in-half. There is much literature written on the topics of habits and behavior change. I ask you to ask yourself, where am I today?
Next, you need to know which lane you’re going to take moving forward. My suggestion for someone getting started is to start in the ‘slow lane’. After some time and after time of building upon your newfound habits and lifestyle changes, you might move into the middle or passing lane. Finally, once you are cruising along you might switch yourself into the fast lane. Remember, you can choose to move back into the passing or slow lanes. I would not want you to crash and burn!! So, the question you need to ask yourself here is, where do I want to go? Let’s try to get to the end of the thruway without too many collisions.
Bottom line, this means we must remember that it is important to start slow and build a proper foundation for new habits, routines, and lifestyle changes. It starts with asking yourself what do I want? It is okay to guard and protect that which makes you feel satisfied and accomplished. In the end of the day, it is about feeling accomplished day in and day out doing the things we do.
Let’s raise a glass and toast TODAY!
