How getting outside has kept me grounded in uncertain times

Capital Recreation is in business to make recreation accessible to all. I am not here to tell you the what, the who, and the when. I am here to support and encourage your positive behaviors. I am a Certified Recreational Therapist (CTRS) breaking down barriers to leisure and recreation participation. This blog is here as a tool to spread my personal thoughts and ideas. But most of all, to create community!
Growing up, I could always be found digging or raking in the back yard or playing ball or riding my bicycle in the neighborhood and beyond. I have always enjoyed being outside and continue to enjoy getting outside and exploring the local (and not so local) parks and trail systems in the Washington DC region. I could be found outside in cold, heat, rain, or snow. Nothing has ever kept me from going outside – unless there was an imminent danger in going out. Remember, safety first!
When getting out and exploring there is this wholesome feeling I feel. A great sense of satisfaction, pride, and joy! Whether it is listening to the morning bird song or listening to the waves crash on shore, there is not much more which I can ask for. The world is a beautiful place for me to fill all my senses. Smelling the flowers in meadows, watching hawks and eagles fly overhead, feeling the sand between my toes and the sun in my face – are just a few of the wonders of the world that … just have me in my happy place!
Last year (March 2020) when COVID-19 took root in our lives and upended everything, there was one thing I knew I had to do. That was, open my sliding door to my balcony a half hour before dawn. The cool crisp morning air, the birds chirping reminded me that there is hope. It reminded me that every single day is unique, and that I have the ability to control my narrative … just like the birds singing and the sun rising. With our stay-at-home orders it meant we weren’t traveling by car … but it did not mean I could walk and run the trails beyond the yard (masked of course).
Everyday I made it my habit to get outside. No matter what was happening. Even if I was stressed-out and feeling panicked. I still picked myself up to get out … even for a walk. When done with the activity I always felt better. Even today, with little motivation to go for my morning run I completed it. Why? Because I know how good I will feel when I am done!
There are healing powers in nature. Feeling down and out? Go for a walk! I bet it will help. You can do the same. It does not cost money and is one of the best ways to improve your day. Even better, pull a friend along. Keeping yourself accountable will help you improve your chances of being successful. Why not do it in nature?
