Capital Recreation is in business to make recreation accessible to all. I am not here to tell you the what, the who, and the when. I am here to support and encourage your positive behaviors. I am a Certified Recreational Therapist breaking down barriers to leisure and recreation participation. This blog is here as a tool to spread my personal thoughts and ideas. But most of all, to create community!

“If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you develop the habit in little matters. Excellence is not an exception, it is a prevailing attitude.” ~Colin Powell

In my last post I proposed three steps to help you succeed in starting new habits. To jog your memory here they are. 1) your initial goals should be small 2) make them easy to do and accessible 3) share your goals with your community. In this post I think it would only be fair to talk about the next step. Going from habit to routine. Habit and routine are not mutually exclusive. I believe there is a specific interconnectedness. Habit and routine need one another to see success today, and tomorrow. Or, as I would like to say, your routine is the sum of your habits … when your habits are strong, your routine(s) are going to be shatterproof. Or think of it this way … like three legs of a stool. For without one, nobody can be successful. When your habits are habitual, and your routines are shatterproof… we can then focus on lifestyle (to be discussed next week). At the base of our foundation, we need to recognize that everything that we do starts with habits and routines. Example: If I want my morning routine to be successful, I need to make it my habit the evening before to include prepping for the next day in my evening routine. That definitely includes prepping my clothing, setting out my coffee, and making my lunch. When I wake in the morning, it is GO time! I don’t need to think too hard or too long about what I need to do. Thus, putting me in the fast lane to starting the day. Once the day is underway, and my brain is awake, I find it easier to take action on things that will challenge me and put me in the growth zone. Bottom line … make your routine successful by making your good habits habitual. Thus, putting yourself in the fast lane for the day.
