Habit – Routine – Lifestyle

Capital Recreation is in business to make recreation accessible to all. I am not here to tell you the what, the who, and the when. I am here to support and encourage your positive behaviors. I am a Certified Recreational Therapist breaking down barriers to leisure and recreation participation. This blog is here as a tool to spread my personal thoughts and ideas. But most of all, to create community!

“The sum of our actions create routine which lead you to our lifestyle.” ~Shlomo Fishman

Habit, habit, habit! I would like to start this posting by asking you to think about the first handful of things you do after you wake each day. This could and should include turning off the alarm (if you use one), washing up, and eating breakfast. How often do you think about the order in which these tasks items are completed? For myself, I don’t think I give it more than a second or two. It has become so ingrained in me, and I take care of starting my day without much thought. Now, think about adding or removing something from this routine … how does it feel? Awkward? Right?! Now I ask, think about six weeks from now – you have modified your actions… how does it feel? Probably a whole lot more natural. Personally, I am making an effort to start my day with just 3 minutes of silent and still meditation (you can read more about my goal in last weeks post). Initially it felt awkward and unnatural to be doing this. Now that I’ve been making it my goal – and just doing it, the silent meditation feels natural. On mornings when I don’t meditate, I feel like something is missing in my day. The same could be said about my evening journaling. It started out feeling as though I was trying to force something upon myself. Now, it is part of what I do, and I cannot see myself stopping anytime soon. So, let’s wrap this up and bring ourselves to where we started. I challenge you to do what I have started with. Go ahead and make a few small tangible goals. Bottom line, if you want to improve your chances of being successful 1) your initial goals should be small 2) make it easy to do 3) share your goals with your community.

I would love to hear from you! Share your morning habits using the hashtag #shlomotrained or comment below.

Until next time – peace, and virtual fist bump going your way!
