Pulling Off The Band-Aid & Setting Goals

Capital Recreation is in business to make recreation accessible to all. I am not here to tell you the what, the who, and the when. I am here to support and encourage your positive behaviors. I am a Certified Recreational Therapist breaking down barriers to leisure and recreation participation. This blog is here as a tool to spread my personal thoughts and ideas. But most of all, to create community!

We all have some type of to-do lists. Sometimes we get the tasks done. But more times than not, we don’t get around to accomplishing and completing what we set out to do. The questions I am always curious about are, what inspired you to set your goals in the first place? What allowed you to get started on your pursuit? What happened along the way that you got derailed? I’m of the mindset, there are no tricks, hacks, or seven steps to success. I find success when I make the commitment, show up each day, and put in the intentional work. I too follow my heart toward the things that I enjoy doing. Further, when I look at the things I enjoy doing, the possibilities are endless. I try to stay away from things or tasks which feel forced. When setting personal goals, they are for you and nobody else. So why try to force yourself to do something which isn’t in your ‘wheelhouse’? So, rip the band-aid off and just start doing things for you. I am not telling your to be selfish and forget about everything else… What I am conveying – is for you to set a handful of goals (at least 3 per week), that are for you! At first, you might have to move things around in your schedule. But, once you make the commitment and are taking the time to meet your personal goals, you will feel good.

Action: Take 5 minutes right now with pen and paper or pluck away at your keyboard and write down 3 things you’re already doing through the course of your day or week. For example, if you plan on going for a walk, run, or propel yourself around the neighborhood. Write it down. The same could be said about everything else.

When you write down your tasks and place a checkmark once completed, you will have completed something nobody can take from you. I find great satisfaction in creating a list and check marking the tasks as I go along. At the end of the week, no matter what else happened around me, I have something which I could cherish and celebrate! If you’re already doing this, amazing, then I say add one more task or increase your focus and intention. If you’re just getting started, make your three goals and go!

Over time, you’ll realize that you have more goals and tasks that you’ll want to meet and achieve… which is where we will pick-up next week, Sorting Priorities.
